A museum unique and singular


Two brothers, Abel and João de Lacerda, founded in the fifties, an unusual museum, a small village called Caramulo, situated on a mountain in central Portugal, with lush vegetation, facing south, a valley about 80 km long: the most vast panorama of the country.

Abel Lacerda, passionate for art, build a building with modern concepts of museology, to expose an unusual collection of art objects made up of 500 pieces of painting, sculpture, furniture, ceramics and tapestries, ranging from Roman times up Picasso.

João de Lacerda, in love with cars, build another building attached to the first, designed to expose 100 cars and motorcycles, on the principle that all cars could be easily removed, for display and preservation.

With the untimely death of Abel de Lacerda in 1957, created the Foundation Abel Lacerda - today Abel Foundation and John de Lacerda - owner of two museums of Art and Cars, open to the public throughout the year. More than 1 million visitors entered this half century, the Museum of Caramulo.


Art Collection



Begun in 1953 on the initiative of Abel Lacerda, under the theme of generosity, the Museum's art collection comprised Caramulo offers collectors and contemporary artists of renown, as Vieira da Silva, Jean Lurçat, Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso .

The art collection is of enormous wealth given the different categories of objects and terminating covering a wide historical period from antiquity to contemporary, in a rigorous selection.

The rooms of the museum are filled with pieces of painting, sculpture, furniture, jewelry, ivory, glass, enamel, textiles and ceramics. In this last section, the pieces reveal the taste and technical ceramics from various eras, from the Han and Tang up a jar of Picasso, Delft and Ming porcelain, with particular reference to the famous bottle of Jorge Alvares, 1552.

In the textile section, we highlight four monumental tapestries, commissioned by the King of Discovery - D. Manuel I - woven in Tournai in 1. Quarter of the sixteenth century. By its enormous cultural value, these pieces are a privileged means for understanding the sixteenth century, relations between Portugal and Flanders to the influence of Portugesa Discoveries in Western art.

In terms of painting, Caramulo Museum presents a selection of works by well-known national artists such as Onix, Silva Porto, Columbano and Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, still going by Flemish artists like Brother Carlos, Quinten Metsijs, Isembrant, or Jacob Jordaens French as Hyacinthe Rigaud, Frans Pourbus, Raoul Dufy and Fernand Léger.

The core of sculpture is composed of parts of Portuguese artists such as Salvador Barata Feyo, Canto da Maya, Leopoldo de Almeida or António Duarte, as well as foreigners, and José José Cañas Clará.

The Caramulo Museum is rightly considered one of the principal of Portugal, with careful and rigorous selection of the exhibited works, thus constituting an extraordinary collection that crosses all areas of Art.

Collection of Cars


The collection of Cars, Motorcycles and Bicycles Caramulo Museum was started by John de Lacerda in 1955 by purchasing a T Ford, 1925. Since then, the collection grew, and is now on display in Caramulo.

Due to the success of the Museum of Caramulo and his enormous prestige, this car was welcoming in storage, thus extending the estate exposure.

However, it is imperative condition for a car to be exposed, to be restored and mechanically flawless, as he was born, thus allowing it to circulate normally in parades or even participate in events.

This objective presided over the construction of the annex building, so that each vehicle can get out instantly without restrictions. This is because all cars circulate abroad, at least 2 times a year, and recorded in a single chip, all that has occurred in these outputs.

The Caramulo Museum has a permanent exhibition of 30 motorcycles and 70 cars (including 14 veterans), representing 36 brands from seven countries. The oldest is a 1886 Benz and later a Ferrari 456, 1998. There is a varied collection of old bicycles and tricycles.

Many cars have a relationship with the history of Portugal. In the collection vehicle permanently displayed in the museum can be observed:

  • the oldest car still in operation in Portugal, the Peugeot 1899;
  • Bugatti 35B, in which Lehrfeld established in 1931, the kilometer record released, more than 200 km / h;
  • Mercedes-Benz and Cadillac were screened at the service of Professor. Dr. Oliveira Salazar;
  • Pegaso Sport, offered by General Franco to President Craveiro Lopes;
  • Chrysler Imperial PIDE who starred in "Escape from Caxias Prison";
  • Renault was the membership director John Franco;
  • Rolls-Royce who served Queen Elizabeth II, President Eisenhower and Pope John Paul II during his visits to Portugal;
  • the Fiat offered to João de Lacerda, the president of the Fiat Group.

Toy Collection


The Caramulo Museum opened to the public in March 2004, an exhibition of antique toys and miniatures collection.

This new exhibition, permanently, with more than 3000 pieces and covers almost a century of history and toy collectors, showing the evolution of the toy and miniature through its various phases and materials.

Tin to plastic, the mass of iron, the exhibition offers a wide variety not only in terms of exhibits, as in those countries and means of production.

The variety of subjects exposed is very large, covering areas such as aviation, trains, boats, cars and ground transportation, military and war, courses of action, games and science fiction, not forgetting the toys of Portuguese origin.

The Museum of Caramulo expect with this new challenge, not only complement the existing collections to increase their supply in educational services and teaching, thus gaining new audiences.

In addition to the collection, the museum has organized the annual Fair of Miniatures and Antique Toys (Exchange, Buy & Sell) in the cloister, bringing sellers and collectors from north to south in a different place of the usual while providing a visit to the Museum's collections Caramulo .

Temporary Exhibitions


The temporary exhibitions are one of the most important museums of the vehicle dynamics. The Caramulo Museum, the importance and richness of its collections, could not fail to fulfill this important museum function, encouraging a closer relationship with the community that surrounds it, and offering a more exciting trip.

Thus, began in 2002 the program of temporary exhibitions, which aims to streamline the halls of the Museum of Caramulo, collectors and institutions involved in creating and mounting exhibitions which aim at stimulating the cultural background of diverse audiences.

The program of temporary exhibitions of the Museum of Caramulo, includes exhibits related to automotive history and art collections on display, and may even go beyond them. It is intended, thus widening the spectrum of speech exhibition, opening the door to other collections and encouraging different audiences to discover fun, but rigorous exhibits.

For this reason, the museum organizes temporary exhibitions Caramulo inside and outside its doors, even bringing out collections, to ensure a turnover in exposed subjects and design their collections elsewhere than Caramulo.
